How North Carolina taxes a car purchase
- Trade-in: Allowed for dealer and private sales (any allowance given for a vehicle taken in trade). The dealer doc fee is ADDED to the base.
- Private sale: HUT on the vehicle's market value (presumed to be the value in the DMV Commissioner's schedule of values), less any trade allowance - not necessarily the price paid.
- Bought in another state: Credit for sales/excise tax paid to another state within 90 days before applying for the NC title. If a vehicle bought from a dealer is titled in NC more than 90 days after purchase, no credit is allowed and full HUT is due on price + doc fee + accessories - trade-in.
- Local tax: No local sales tax on vehicles: the Highway Use Tax replaces sales tax. County/regional registration taxes are under registration.
Exemptions (check the official rule before relying on one)
- Inheritance (will or intestacy):
- Divorce / marital separation:
- Removing a co-owner: Only when there is no consideration.
- Transfer to a revocable trust: Owner is the sole beneficiary.
- Out-of-state titled vehicles: Most full exemptions don't apply to a vehicle titled in another state at the time of transfer.
Dealer fees
Doc, processing and prep fees are set by the dealer, not the state. No dollar cap in NC law. The dealer must post the fee, disclose it in price advertising and itemize it on the buyer's order; the fee is included in the Highway Use Tax base.
