FAQ

How is car sales tax calculated?

Each state taxes the price (some after subtracting a trade-in) at its own rate, and many add a local rate by where you live. Title, registration and plate fees come on top, and some states charge a yearly value-based tax. Pick your state for every line with its official source.

Is this the final amount I'll pay?

No. These are estimates of government taxes and fees from official sources; your DMV or county calculates the final amount. Where a rule depends on something we don't ask (your county, the car's weight) we show a range or a line you fill in.

Which states do you cover?

The 16 states with the most searches and reachable official sources: California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington. Other states aren't covered yet.

Estimates of government taxes and fees from official sources; your DMV or county calculates the final amount; not tax or legal advice. Every figure is taken from an official state page (quoted and dated in the sources) and can change. Dealer-set fees are not government fees. Exemptions are described, never applied for you: check the official rule and form.
